Toxins and Pollutants | Sick Building Syndrome

Toxins and Pollutants | Sick Building Syndrome

Sick Building Syndrome occurs when building occupants experience health problems that seem to be linked to time spent in the structure. Sick Building Syndrome can cause minor health problems like headaches and cold symptoms, and can also result in serious illnesses like respiratory infections, asthma, extreme allergies and even cancer. SBS may be diagnosed when a number of workers or residents come forward with similar symptoms and no identifiable cause.

A 1996 Cornell University study found that in every one of 35 buildings surveyed for the study, at least 20% of the occupants had experienced symptoms related to Sick Building Syndrome. Poor Ventilation, lack of air movement, humidity, airborne pollution, bacteria, mold, biological contamination, and uncomfortable temperature are all factors that can lead to Sick Building Syndrome. SBS reduces worker productivity and may also increase absenteeism.

People who suffer from Sick Building Syndrome may have a case against the owners or managers of the building on the basis of poor building design, inadequate maintenance, unsafe levels of toxic materials, or failure to meet EPA and building code standards.
